Welcome to the Camp Abbey Retreat Center, a
ministry of the CYO/Youth & Young Adult Ministry Office of the
Archdiocese of New Orleans.
Camp Abbey was
originally a Catholic summer camp for children sponsored by the
Benedictine community of St. Joseph Abbey in cooperation with the
Knights of Columbus. The facility was also used during the
academic year for parish and high school youth retreats. After
operating from 1960-2006, the camp was closed. In 2010, the
Archdiocese of New Orleans leased the property from St. Joseph Abbey and
undertook at $4.1 million renovation of the entire camp, making it
again worthy for use as a place where young people can develop their
relationship with Jesus Christ, each other, and the Church, through
retreats and a summer camp program.
Construction began in
December 2010 and was largely complete in September 2011. Most
Rev. Gregory M. Aymond, Archbishop of New Orleans, blessed and
dedicated the facility on November 30, 2011. Camp Abbey Retreat Center
is currently open for retreat group bookings, and
a summer camp program uniting traditions of the old Camp Abbey with the
latest in Catholic camping resources, will begin in June 2012.
